Boom Ball for Kinect (Xbox One) - Review

Boom Ball for Kinect releases on the 5th December here in the UK and is priced at £7.99. North Americans were able to download it from the 28th November for $9.99 - probably because they have much bigger living rooms than us, so they can use Kinect without dismantling the couch!

Boom Ball is a cute little puzzle game that has you standing in your living room throwing balls at blocks to empty the screen. It plays kinda how you would expect a goal keeping game to play if one was made for Kinect (My partner and son are both very keen on this idea!) You can step from side to side to see more of the playing field and you have to effectively stop the ball from leaving the screen so that you may be able to clear the level. You get a maximum of five balls you see, and there are often many, many more blocks than that on the screen.

I thought the game played really well. It is the first game I've bothered to use my Kinect for since getting the One, unless you count yelling 'Fire Arrows' over and over when playing Tomb Raider. There aren't really many games out for this generation of Kinect that utilise it in the same way the last one did, but more than that I think I was so put off the experience by Kinect 1.0 that I have stayed away from the few games that do require me to get off my butt (although you can play this sitting down, you just won't do as well). With Boom Ball for Kinect though it felt very responsive, there weren't really any moments of utter frustration at having your movement misunderstood. I sucked at the game because I sucked  at the game, not because Kinect sucked, which strangely enough is much nicer than feeling like the hardware is stopping you from getting gold medals.

But maybe Kinects responsiveness lies in the simplicity of this game. It doesn't try to do too much. It is a block-busting game. You can hit the blocks, move side to side and zoom in on the menu and thats about it. But it doesn't need anything more than this. Boom Ball for Kinect makes a fun little party game, perfect for this time of year as families start congregating at each others houses. And the fact that this had no trouble going from my 6'4 partner to my 3 foot tall son means that there will much less arguing if we do get the whole family round. Saying that, when my two year old daughter toddled in the way of the screen whilst we were on the menu it did cause some confusion, but this didn't seem to be a problem when we were in the game proper.

My five year old son saw me playing this game and thought it looked pretty cool, so I thought I'd let him have a go at playing reviewer for a bit. He had a good go on the game and did pretty well, especially when you consider that he NEVER stops jumping and bouncing. He's very excitable. Anyway the game had no trouble picking him up at all, which was brilliant - I remember when we had the old Kinect there were a lot of tears when he was trying to play Kinectimals, it just couldn't pick up his tiny arms. Anyway I digress; At one point three of us were taking it in turns to play a level and the game seamlessly let us drop in and drop out, which is exactly what you need with this kind of game.

Zach thought this game was 'loads of fun' and I have to agree. If you're after something a little different this holiday season than you could pick up much worse.

Jigsaw Jumble (XBLIG) Review

Jigsaw Jumble Xmas is available now on the XBLIG Marketplace for 80MSP.

I have a three year old son who is MAD for jigsaws he has loads and we're always doing them together. So what better than a digital jigsaw, where we can't lose any pieces?
This game is actually pretty good, and if like me you have young puzzle mad kids it's a must have for the holiday season. This is a time to spend with family and what better way than completing a puzzle together.
The graphics are cute, the music is cute. Obviously there is nothing groundbreaking here. But after some of the blockbuster titles I've received for Christmas, this was a welcome change. Nice simple gameplay that can be enjoyed by all of us, and not saved for when the kids are in bed!
There are a variety of puzzles, all with different difficulty settings so there are plenty of options to keep even the most seasoned jigsawers busy.

80MSP is nothing for a game that saw me and my son snuggling up together. Like I said if you have kids, buy it. If you love puzzles buy it and even if you're just looking for something a little different on your Xbox, buy it!

Santas Xmas Dash II (XBLIG) Review

Santas Xmas Dash II is available now on the XBLIG Marketplace for 80MSP.

Ok. I'm just going to run headlong into the meat of this review. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. There I said it. I know I've always said in the past that 80MSP is peanuts so most Indie titles are worth a try but that was before I played this game.
The word 'dash' for me implies a rush. You have to hurry to do what you need to do. Not so in this game. All you do in this game is press the corresponding button to make Santa go from house to house handing out presents. That is all. And it is super easy. I managed it whilst feeding my baby daughter and making sure my son doesn't kill himself jumping off the couch declaring 'I'm Batman' (It's been an eventful Christmas!)

The multiplayer offers a little more fun for your money, but again very little and very short-lived. The graphics are cutesy and the music is fun, well at least one of the songs is!

I don't really see anyone wanting to pick this game over much else this christmas. I've gotta say skip this one guys!

Christmas Carnage (XBLIG) Review

Christmas Carnage is available now on the XBLIG Marketplace for 80MSP.

Everybody loves christmas right? Apparently not the people at Bandana Games as they have released Christmas Carnage, a game about shooting everything that signifies Christmas.

Ok. So you open the game to a very basic menu, that looks like it could have been made with Paint. BUT there is a cute little countdown to Christmas ay bobbing about near the top. It's a nice touch, but it doesn't really detract from the clipart-esque fairy stood by the side.

Stay on this menu long enough and you'll be treated*note the hint of sarcasm* to the voice acting/sound affects. Oh God it is bad. It's lazy and nowhere near as merry as the nice, christmas music.

Go into the game and unfortunately the clipart theme continues. It's bad background after bad background as you're pitted against varying Christmas themed enemies. The scrolling text at the bottom is actually pretty funny...but if you're the one playing be warned, reading it all may well lead to your death, it scrolls along AS the enemies come onto the screen.

It's a typical twin-stick shooter, nothing new there. And I guess there is a certain charm to it. It plays pretty well, but you may want to turn down the volume, the voice acting gets annoying very quickly.

The point of the game is to get the highest score. So you'd expect to see a Leaderboard of some type right? WRONG. There are no leaderboards in this game, not even local ones, it just records your best ever score. That is all. That's a very poor show in a game like this, hopefully something the developer will look into doing in the future.

At 80MSP it's worth a try. It's not going to break the bank and it provides a little entertainment. Nothing spectacular but nothing too bad it shouldn't be there.
